Why it is free
How we actually make money.
A free service aimed at older adults and their families should expect this question, and should answer it without wriggling.
The short version
The check is free and stays free. We earn from two paid products, and we only mention them when they genuinely fit what you told us.
Family Observatory
A subscription for families coordinating care between several people: appointments, meals, medication reminders, transport, routines, and who is actually doing what. It is relevant when a family has a coordination problem, and irrelevant when they do not.
Silvera Mobility
Mobility equipment and the adaptation around it, for people whose needs are changing. Relevant when somebody is struggling to get around, and not otherwise.
What that means in practice
- The free result comes first, always. Your list is the product, not the bait. It is not shortened, reordered or held back to make a paid option look better.
- Government and nonprofit programs are in your list even though we earn nothing from them. Most of what we surface makes us no money at all. IHSS, Paid Family Leave, Medicare Savings Programs, VA benefits and energy assistance pay us nothing.
- If nothing we sell fits, we do not mention it. A recommendation that does not fit is not a soft sell, it is noise in a document somebody is relying on.
- We do not sell your information. Not to insurers, not to agencies, not to lead buyers, not to anyone.
The test we hold ourselves to. A plan that lists only the things we sell is a failure of the product, not a clever conversion. If the honest answer to your situation is four government programs and nothing of ours, that is the answer you should get.
What we will not do to earn it
We will not sell or rent your answers. We will not pass your details to a company that pays us for introductions. We will not run the check as a way of building a list to call you about something else.
We will not use fear to sell. This category is full of it, because frightened people buy quickly, and it works on exactly the people who can least afford it.
And we will not imply we are the government. No seals, no official looking design, no borrowed authority. If we ever need to look like a federal agency to be trusted, we have already lost the argument.
Why free at all
Because the people who most need this are the least able to gamble money on whether it will be useful. Charging at the front door would filter out precisely the families with the most unclaimed help sitting there, which would make the whole thing pointless.
